/mnt/bigdata is capacity-oriented network-attached rotational storage with read caching. It is the shared tier for large or growing durable datasets and for files, libraries, or archives that do not require frequent low-latency access.
It is not temporary storage. Caches, CI/build workspaces, downloads, extraction space, and other disposable intermediates belong on bounded local disk or RAM.
The canonical placement and dataset contract is Storage placement policy.

Durable datasets use compact binary payloads with a local FORMAT.md. Time-oriented data uses chronological, independently verifiable chunks plus a machine-readable manifest recording each chunk's time bounds, schema version, record count, byte size, checksum, and path.
Chunking must make time-range lookup quick, limit fatal corruption to a short interval, and avoid thousands of tiny files. Bulk staging and intermediate transformations remain local; readers accept only complete validated chunks referenced by the committed manifest.
Existing paths and service exceptions must remain stable until deliberately reviewed and migrated. This policy does not authorize moving or deleting current data.
